Assalamualaikum & Hello all
A million steps always start with
the first one. True indeed. I still remember my baby steps when I first arrived
in Melbourne. I was very lucky as my BFF and her family is in Melbourne too at
that time. So, they were in charge of the ‘orientation’. Alhamdulillah
I met my 1st Supervisor
on my 4th day in Melbourne. What an eager beaver, LOL. We discussed
basic issues such as frequency of meeting, research timeline and also my
research topic. At that time I was still adjusting to the blistering cold
winter. I had a lot on my plate, literally. Imagine starting a new life (all
over again), being home sick and etc. Not an easy thing to do (especially at
the age where you are complacent and kind of stable). But I am determined to settle
down in a short time (eager beaver, again).

Let me share some of the most
important rules I applied when I started my journey in Melbourne
Rule #1
Be mindful of the intention- TO
STUDY, TO COMPLETE A PhD
I am truly blessed to have been
reminded about my mission before I arrive in Melbourne. A colleague told me “pi
mengaji elok-elok, jangan dok lupa niat tu” (TRANSLATION: Never forget your
most important intention- TO STUDY). It might seem petty but, it is a BIG
reminder for me. I am definitely thankful for that. Whenever I feel
demotivated, I always reset my intention and get back on track and just keep
going.
Rule #2
Change your mindset
For someone with a career and at
a rather complacent stage in life, it is a challenge to change your mindset
about the new life you are about to start. It is a known fact that student with
overseas scholarship are expected to live below poverty line especially in
Australia. Rent is charged on a weekly basis, transportation is not cheap,
groceries cost a fortune and the list goes on. I’m not the type who goes
shopping every month, but I spoil myself with Spa and food on a regular basis.
I would splurge on handbags, shoes and clothes at least twice (or more) a year.
The newly acquired status
(student) would restrict me from enjoying some of the things I do regularly. Instead
of enjoying food in the restaurant, I have to cook my food and instead of
spending money on handbags and shoes, I save for the rainy days. It is not a
big sacrifice because I know this is just temporary. I think this is what
prioritizing means.
